04/08/2018 - END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND GRADUATION OF 38 CHILDREN FROM CENTRO SAN JOSÉ (MÉXICO)

The end of the school year has arrived at Centro San José, marking another year of dedicating ourselves to the comprehensive development of the preschool boys and girls in the Jardines of San Juan Community, Ajusco, Mexico.
 
The feast that commemorates the end of the academic year is always a moment of joy, and the children attend, elegantly dressed and accompanied by their families. At the same it is a moment of sadness, due to the goodbyes that we must say. For the three-year-old preschoolers, their goodbye is final, and their time of formation with us has ended.
 
For the teachers of the three-year-old preschoolers, the party marked the conclusion of a long road of accompanying thirty-eight children and their families in their training at Centro San José for three consecutive years. Their next class will be at the primary school, where they will continue their formation.
 
The feast began with a Mass of Thanksgiving, a beautiful celebration and a good time for the families to show their gratitude for the training and care their children have received at the center. Centro San José also shows their appreciation to the families for the comprehensive work they have done: their involvement, dedication and collaboration with the center in the development of their children throughout the school year.
 
The work of the parents in the training of their children is important and a big help in their development. The children attend the center daily to play, learn and have fun. Then, it is the continuity at home, where their training in the first stages of life is completed, and they learn values, virtues, skills and knowledge.
 
We finish this academic cycle with another great achievement: thirty-eight children will attend the primary school to continue their training. The other seventy children will advance to the next levels at Centro San José. At the same time, we will receive a good number of new students and continue to offer this support to the community.


 

29/08/2017 - PENNIES FOR PENCILS: A WAY TO HELP SCHOOL CHILDREN IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

At the beginning of this year, Saint Lucy Parish School, in Racine (Wisconsin) did a “penny competition” to raise funds for the children of La Sagrada Familia parish in the Dominican Republic. At the end of the fundraising $1,500.00 were collected for the Pennies for Pencils Program.
 
Every year, at the beginning of the school year in the Dominican Republic, many families have difficulties to pay for the school materials and uniforms of their children. It is so hard for them to obtain these goods that as a result many kids start the school a few weeks late, when finally their families have the opportunity to buy the materials for them. With the help from Saint Lucy, La Sagrada Familia Parish has been able to give notebooks, pencils and uniforms to some of our neediest children. From here we would like to thank the school children of Saint Lucy for helping children in the Dominican Republic to go to school!!


 

01/08/2017 - END OF THE YEAR AT THE SAN JOSÉ CENTER IN MEXICO: A STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING

In a society as demanding as ours, it is essential to create a solid educational foundation that promotes the learning and healthy development of children. This is the work that we carry out on a daily basis at the San Jose Community Center for Child Development in Mexico City.
 
In the 2016-2017 school year, which just ended, 36 boys and girls completed satisfactorily the preschool curriculum. On July 14, to celebrate this achievement, the children were surrounded by friends and family at a happy and grateful “end of the year” party. This is a story with a happy ending, that is repeated each year in the town of Jardines de San Juan.
 
The work at the center will continue with the remaining 72 boys and girls who will advance to the next level, with almost 40 more who will join the new school year, beginning at the end of August. The spaces are already filled because parents wanted to enroll their children as soon as possible, in order to give them this gift of growth, development and learning.
 
Since the first day of class (already in the distant past) we engaged in games, activities and learning on a daily basis. The children grew in an environment of healthy coexistence, learning to respect one another, to play together, to share what they have in the center, to accept each other and sometimes to forgive each other, after a fight. This coexistence, adequate nutrition and the tireless work of the educators, all helped to bring about this happy ending for the 2016-2017 school year. We said goodbye to 36 children who completed PreSchool 3, and now are ready to go to elementary school. In a moment as important as this one, the parents and family wanted to be close to their children. In fact, they are proud of the goals they achieved and committed to the road that lies ahead. It was an emotional day, and recognizing how much the children have grown and learned, we, too, share the joy of this happy ending.

Promotion of Early Childhood Reading at the San José Center in Ajusco, Mexico

 

A few months ago, Abriendo Nuevos Caminos Association was selected to participate in the project Libro abierto (An Open Book), organized by IBBY Mexico and Ghandi Bookstore. Abriendo Nuevos Caminos supports the work that the Community of St. Paul is carrying out in the San José Center for Child Development in Ajusco, Mexico City.
 
The project promotes early childhood reading: it attempts to reach out to children through books, to train facilitators who read aloud, and to create the space in which children can imagine what they are hearing. In order to accomplish these goals, two people from the San José Center completed a 40 hour training course and committed to the task of promoting reading among our children, through the practice of storytelling. The following is the testimony of one of them, Yomaira Cordero:
 
«For me, to be a reading facilitator has been a new experience. To create a reading space with and for the children is very fulfilling; it’s also something new and different for them, who no longer see reading as a boring activity, but as fun, as a real game.
 
It is good to provide the tools so that the children become involved in reading, and through it, understand that they can express themselves and discover an attractive new world. They discover that they can express new emotions, they find new ways of getting to know their own environment. And all of this is accomplished always with respect, solidarity and fellowship. A very significant aspect of this project is that parents can have closer communication with their own children, because they go once a week to the classroom to tell stories to the kids.»
 
From the San José Center we would like to thank the Gandhi Bookstore for the 455 books they donated to us. May the little ones continue to nourish their passion for reading!


 

16/08/2016 - AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AGAINST DRUGS

The Community of Saint Paul starts an after school program in Pesebre, a neighborhood in the south of Bogotá

Since last January, members of the CSP have worked in La Resurrección Parish, located in the southern part of Bogotá. The parish territory includes La Resurrección, Granjas de San Pablo and Pesebre neighborhoods: these are humble, working-class areas of the Colombian capital, mostly layer 2 on the socioeconomic classification of the City of Bogota (which lists the neighborhoods of the capital from 1 to 6, with 1 being the areas with least resources and 6 the wealthiest).

These sectors face a remarkable variety of challenges, from the overcrowding of people in homes of poor quality to the difficulties of families in obtaining quality health services; from the few job opportunities for young people to the abandonment of many elderly. However, after listening in various meetings to the population of these neighborhoods, we soon found that one problem concerns them more than any other: the insecurity prevailing in the streets, directly related to the consumption of narcotic substances by many young people, who commit crimes to obtain resources to be able to use drugs. Drug dependence, in turn linked to the lack of opportunities that many young people face, is a real epidemic in these neighborhoods, where everyone recognizes the existence of several "ollas"—literally, “cooking pots”, that is, spots where drugs are sold in the streets of the capital by the nets of trafficking.

Many people have told us about a dramatic new concern: increased drug use among children of progressively younger ages. If a few years ago those who fell into drug dependence were generally kids older than sixteen or seventeen, the need of the drug dealers to expand the sale of their substances has now made it common that children aged nine, ten and eleven may start using them.

While recognizing the magnitude of the problem, and that all our efforts will just be a drop of water in a great ocean, we considered what to do to help, even in a modest way, to curb this trend. We decided to offer tutoring classes in the evenings, on the premises of the parish in the Pesebre neighborhood. We started in late July: fifteen children between 8 and 12 years were enrolled on the first day, and we hope that this service will keep growing. Part of the problem is that many children who go to school in the morning are by themselves when they come home at two or three in the afternoon, since their parents are away at work, many until late into the night. These children then have no one to help them do their homework or to prevent them from leaving and wandering the streets until dusk, which obviously makes it easier for them to end up falling into the networks of consumption. Our proposal is very simple: to provide a space where these children can go after school, and where they will be helped to advance in their studies, with tutoring and room assignments, and thus perhaps prevent drug dependence from taking over their lives. We have just started. We hope that this becomes a long-term project that may bear some fruit!

 
 
 

 


24/09/2015 - GRADUATION: CELEBRATING THE DIGNITY OF THE CHILDREN OF THE PRESCHOOL PROGRAM IN SABANA YEGUA (DOMINICAN REPUBLIC)
 
During the Summer, 45 children graduated from the preschool programs in La Sagrada Familia Parish. We celebrated a formal graduation ceremony (even though the children are very young) to recognize the participation of these kids in the program and their educational advances during the last year, and also to bid them farewell, since in September they will move on to primary school. Our children’s preschool program is conducted at three sites throughout the parish (in the towns of Sabana Yegua, El Ganadero and Los Negros) and it provides initial education for 180 children, from two to five years of age. The little ones go daily to the centers, where they receive education, a nutritional balanced diet (breakfast and lunch) and medical monitoring. Importantly, the preschool program also requires the active participation of their parents. This involvement of the parents includes not just getting the children to and from the school, but also attending meetings and talks about subjects like health and nutrition.

The children in this program of preschool childcare come from families of scarce means who live in marginal towns and settlements within the parish. The poverty and need in which these families find themselves seems at times to strip away their dignity. To conduct a well-organized, formal graduation was a way to restore a bit this dignity, at times lost due to their adversities. The parents came to the graduation dressed elegantly and participated with pride in the different activities, while the children were showing off proudly all of their advances. We hope that these children grow with confidence and the dignity necessary to be good men and women in our society.
